What do these two very different industries have in common? I provide 1x1 leadership coaching for both!


Recently, I’ve been talking with two coaching clients (one from insurance and one from manufacturing) about motivating people on their teams.


I start by asking them to picture their unmotivated employee and to put on that person’s glasses (figuratively, of course), imagining they are that person. I then ask them to jot down the following:


"What do you want to be when you grow up at this organization?"


"What do you want to be when you grow up beyond this organization?"


“How do you want to be seen on our team? Funny? Smart? An expert? A hard worker?”


These questions are powerful because they draw out their employee’s dreams and reveal long-term goals that can build trust and drive development.


After asking each of these leaders to incorporate these questions into their next 1x1s, I followed up. They were both genuinely surprised to discover the type of projects their team members were interested in and what they wanted to do long-term. They even found out who desired to be in leadership and who didn’t.


By trying on your team’s glasses and uncovering the potential within, we can begin to see ways to be helpful to others and invest and create amazing Ripple Effects.
