At the Edge of Our Abilities

At the edge of our abilities….

As the year winds down, I find myself in a more reflective mood, maybe because it’s a time to exhale and breathe or maybe because my mind is already in holiday mode (planning, presents, and patience!). These quieter days, when so many people take time off, bring a pause from the usual chaos—a perfect moment to think about the year that’s been and the one ahead, 2025 here we come.

While reflecting, I came across a question from James Clear that struck me:

"The common narrative is that kids learn faster than adults, but if you watch any toddler play, they spend a large portion of their day attempting things that are on the edge of their ability.

How much time have you spent on the edge of your ability today?"

Wow. That hit home.

How often do we, as adults, shy away from the edge? We think we should already know how to do something or hesitate, worrying if we’ll succeed then decide to “skip it” all together. Even in planning, we often avoid risks, opting for the safer, more predictable route.

This question inspired me to think about my own edge. What’s something I could take on in 2025 that feels just out of reach? I’m still working on a list, but it’s forming, and I’ll be excited to share it when it’s ready (in a more polished form than my current chicken scratch).

What about you…

  • What’s on the edge of your ability for 2025? New skill, a dream you are keeping tucked in your pocket, something that you’ve always wanted to try?

  • Is there something you’ve contemplated but told yourself you couldn’t?

Maybe it’s a time to take a lesson from the littles. The first attempt at something new—whether crawling, walking, or anything else—rarely looks pretty. We might stumble, we might tip over, but then we get up and try again.

Here’s to spending 2025 at the edge of our abilities.
