Two quick ways to boost leadership and life! Walkthroughs and water.
LEADERSHIP
Visibility Brings Ability: Start Your Day with a Walk-Through
Sometimes the simplest actions make the biggest impact. Have you ever had a team member say, “Where have you been? I haven’t seen you lately,” even though you were around just days ago? Perception is reality, isn’t it?
That’s why I start my day with a walk-through (in person whenever possible).
Even if your team is spread across locations, the principle holds true: visibility is a cornerstone of effective leadership. Quick, intentional check-ins are an underrated tool that can completely transform how teams feel—seen, valued, and understood.
One of my favorite leadership moments is a morning “quick connect”—a simple walk through the building to observe, engage, and connect. Those five minutes often reveal overlooked concerns, new ideas, or quiet successes that might otherwise stay hidden. These moments send a powerful message: you matter.
Here’s my tip for staying on top of it:
I always carry a notebook. Old school? Maybe. But when someone shares something that needs attention, writing it down shows I’m taking it seriously. (It’s the same reason I want my server to jot down my order—so nothing gets missed!)
Here’s how to make it work:
- Start your day with an intentional quick connect.
- Be fully present: no phone, no distractions.
- Ask better questions (check last week’s email for tips!) and actively listen to what your team shares.
- Keep a running list of insights. Even if you can’t act on everything right away, following up shows you’re paying attention.
These small, consistent moments create an environment where people feel valued, which boosts trust, collaboration, and engagement.
Think of it this way: I’m not sharing deeply with a stranger, and your team won’t either. If your people don’t see you, they won’t feel connected to you—and they certainly won’t feel safe enough to share important feedback.
The ripple effect of this intentional visibility is a more cohesive, productive, and positive team culture.
LIFE
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
If you’re like me, your water bottle might often be filled with Crystal Light, Gatorade, or—gulp—soda instead of actual water. Guilty as charged. But lately, I’ve been making the switch to plain water, and it’s been shockingly refreshing. Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration.
Drinking water feels like one of those basics we know we should do but often overlook. Yet, the benefits are undeniable: when I’m properly hydrated, my energy stays consistent, I avoid that mid-afternoon slump, and I feel sharper overall.
Here’s the truth: I still love a good flavored drink (I’m working on it!), but making even a small shift toward more water has been a game-changer.
I heard a quote recently:
“Everyone has a myriad of problems—until they have a health problem. Then they have just one.”
Whew. That hit home. It’s a reminder that even small, intentional choices like drinking water add up to better health.
So, here’s to filling your bottle with plain water, staying hydrated, and being one ounce healthier (pun absolutely intended). Cheers!
