Iteration

Lately, I’ve been sitting with a theme that keeps showing up—in keynotes, coaching calls, conversations with friends, and in my own reflections: iteration.
The idea that we rarely nail it on the first try—and that real progress is built through small, steady tweaks. Whether it’s parenting, leadership, or launching something new, we learn by doing, adjusting, and trying again.

Here’s the thing: you don’t get to skip the line when it comes to being more productive, more successful, or better at something. You iterate. That’s where the growth happens.

LIFE

Parenting—just like work—is a constant process of wins, losses, guesses, answers… and lots of iteration. Whether it’s adjusting the family schedule, shifting habits, figuring out meal prep, or squeezing in workouts, this past year has been full of personal (and professional) tweaks and experiments.

One iteration that’s making me laugh lately? My kids, now squarely in their middle school era, suddenly want to earn money. We’ve officially entered the “extra chores for cash” phase—think mowing the lawn, folding laundry, organizing closets. It’s a little expensive (turns out their rates are better than mine!), but honestly, it’s kind of awesome not having to be on duty for everything.

Let’s just say… our “earning money” parenting plan has gone through a few versions. Because, how many chores can you dream up in a day…and how much are things worth (today’s prices aren’t cheap, ha!).

It’s a reminder that small shifts can bring big wins—and sometimes, even joy.

What’s a recent iteration in your life that’s made you smile? I’d love to hear it.

The Power of Iteration: Why You Don’t Have to Get It Perfect—Just Get It Going
In the past two weeks, two different people reached out to ask about starting or growing a business. And both times, they were a little surprised when I said: It’s all about iterating.

There was no big moment where everything suddenly clicked. When I first started, my social media was scattered, my services were loosely defined, and I didn’t exactly have a roadmap. But piece by piece—one speaking event, one email, one messy middle at a time—I started figuring it out.

There’s this myth that success comes from having a perfect plan or polished launch. But in my experience, it’s persistence, not perfection, that keeps you moving forward. I’ve been iterating like a madwoman. And that messy process? It’s the secret sauce.

This past fall, I began refreshing my website and speaker reel. Dozens of edits later—photos, copy, video clips—I can tell you, it was not glamorous. But when I look back at my very first one-page website (which basically said “Hi, I’m Lisa, and I talk about generational leadership”), I can’t help but smile at how far it’s come—and how far I’ve come, too.

Today, I’ve got a beautiful new site and a brand-new speaker video (be sure to check it out). Are they perfect? Nope. But they’re the next version. And another version will come after that. That’s the magic of iteration.

So if you’re waiting to get it right—stop. Just get it going. Post the thing. Pitch the idea. Launch the project. Show up imperfectly… and powerfully.
