Yesterday, in two out of my three meetings, someone mentioned, “It’s the home stretch.” What struck me wasn’t just the words, but how differently each person said it. Their tone, facial expression, and intent revealed something unique:
One person seemed barely hanging on, just trying to push through (we’ve all been there).
Another spoke with excitement, energized by the finish line in sight (I’ll have what they’re having!).
The third felt calm and focused, simply putting in the effort with quiet diligence (just keep swimming!).
It got me thinking about how this final stretch of the year feels different for all of us. As leaders and professionals, we often experience a range of emotions in the “home stretch”—from exhaustion to exhilaration, sometimes both in the same day.
With only a few days left in 2024, we’re all working to wrap up projects, hit milestones, and meet those KPIs and metrics. Here’s what I’m focusing on:
Mental game – Coping effectively (or at least giving it a good ol’ heave-ho) with stress and being intentional about what I allow myself to think (You’ve got this! Just chip away at it.).
Emotional game – Being aware of my emotions and choosing how much energy to give to each moment (The only thing I can control is what I think, say, and do.).
Micro-behaviors – Noticing the tiny, often unconscious actions that can make others feel included, valued, and motivated—or excluded, unappreciated, and disrespected (Small cranky moments spread like wildfire.).
Creating a good ripple effect and finishing the year strong isn’t just about results—it’s about how we get there.
So, what does your home stretch look like? Are you hanging on, fired up, or somewhere in between? Wherever you are, know that the effort you’re putting in matters—and it’s shaping a meaningful end to your year.
Here’s to crossing that finish line—and to the fresh starting line waiting for us in the new year!
