Failure isn't the end—it's the beginning.
I once heard at an event, during a Q&A panel discussion, a person from the audience asked a member of the panel, “What’s one thing you should do when pursuing success?” The panelist responded, “Fail.”
The audience wasn’t expecting that answer, myself included. I was expecting some motivational fluff, or at the very least a book to read.
The panelist instead followed up with, “How will I know what works best without trying a variety of things? Some things will work, and others will not, but I know that I will be further down the path if I try some things and keep failing forward.”
It occurred to me that, just like a scientist conducts experiments in a lab, we should do the same in life, especially in business. Give ourselves permission to try small things to test an idea or a goal…discover what works.
I actually bought a pair of scientist goggles ($3 dollars on Amazon) to remind myself that:
I need to keep living in the lab and trying new things. Small experiments that fail do not mean that I am a failure, only that that idea didn’t work…time to try a new one
Wear goggles, because you never know when you might need protective gear. It’s always good to be ready.
If you are in the middle of a "failure," I want to encourage you to reflect, learn, and push forward.
