Creating Momentum (Even When Summer’s Messy & Work Feels Weird)

Hi,

Lately, I’ve noticed a theme popping up—in coaching calls, in conversations with friends, and even in my own moments. It seems like a lot of us are carrying a mix of “this is fine” and “something needs to shift.” Maybe it’s a role, a routine, or a rhythm that just isn’t working anymore. And while the need for change can feel obvious, the next step? Not so much. That’s where this week’s note begins.

LEADERSHIP

The Power of the Next Three
I’ve been hearing it everywhere lately—people saying, “Something needs to change.”
Maybe it’s a job that no longer fits.
Maybe it’s a shift in family dynamics.
Maybe it’s just that quiet, nagging sense that this isn’t it.
In those moments, the gap between knowing things need to change and knowing what to do about it can feel frustrating, heavy—like you’re stuck in place.
When I feel that way, like I’m trudging through mud, one strategy always helps: I pause and do the Next Three.
I grab a sticky note, let out a big sigh (because breathing helps, right?!), and ask myself: What are three small things I could do to create action?
Not a five-year plan. Not a reinvention. Just three doable steps to spark momentum.
Here are a few that often land on my list:

  • Who could I reach out to?
  • What small event could I attend?
  • What class or webinar could I take?
  • Where could I poke around and ask a few questions?

These aren’t sweeping, inspirational tasks—they’re practical nudges that get things moving, even if the direction seems unclear.
Years ago, I went to a free half-day conference to learn more about running my business. I gave myself one goal: talk to three people. I left with new friends who became collaborators, referrers, and steady support—even now, seven years later. That one small step opened a door I didn’t even know I needed.
So if something’s stirring in you—if you know change is coming or needs to—don’t wait for clarity to strike like lightning.
Start with your Next Three.
Let action create action.

LIFE

Summer Is Awesome… Sort of. Schedule Swaps & A Good Set of Headphones

I don’t know about you, but summer feels like the ultimate contradiction.
I love the warm weather, longer days, and the chance to spend more time with my family.
But I also work from home—and my productivity takes a hit when I’m also the snack provider, activity coordinator, and full-time “mom” responder. (Who knew a child could say your name 47 times in 10 minutes?!)
I know this season—especially while my kids still want to talk to me—is fleeting. (Both are headed to middle school next year!) And I truly do love it.
But wow, it can be hard.
So I’ve been leaning into something I call the schedule swap.
I shift certain work earlier in the day, while my kids are still asleep. I sneak off to a coffee shop or library when I need focused time. It’s not perfect—but it helps keep things moving.
Would I be more productive if my house was quiet all day? Absolutely.
Would I sit outside and work in the sunshine like some kind of Pinterest post? Maybe.
But for now, I’m giving myself grace. The work gets done—it just happens on a different timeline.
Also: I bought a cheap pair of DJ-style headphones (the kind that cover your whole ear), and they’ve been a lifesaver for blocking out laughter, rowdy play, and the occasional Nerf dart battle.
If you’re in the thick of summer life too, I’d love to know:
What’s helping you stay sane and get things done?
