Motivation and accountability are two hot topics!

Developing teams and motivating is hard work! If you have areas of opportunity, I encourage you to start small and chip away….stay persistent!

Motivation and accountability are two hot topics!

Earlier this week I facilitated a 90-minute session, in partnership with Northeast Iowa Community College, to a group of HR Professionals. The focus of our time was on how to motivate and develop a continuous improvement mindset on teams.

Three key takeaways included:

• A key part of motivation is that it is in the eye of the beholder. Our values, experiences, and season of life affect how we show up at work. Consider these when working to motivate.

• Taking a step back and evaluating team culture from the lens of attitudes, norms, and beliefs. What is the current attitude or mood of the team (i.e. burnt-out vs engaged)? What is it normal for your team (i.e. normal to have many meetings that aren’t productive)? What does your team believe in (i.e. believe it is important to treat each other with respect)? Do any of these need adjustments and what would be helpful to add or change?

• It’s not my Job – Often times (as leaders) our emotional response to this phrase is frustration or anger. But what if it was curiosity instead? Finding out why people think or feel a certain way can be instrumental in fixing their mindset and getting rid of “it’s not my job.”
